The final tally of the 2016 Virginia marriage license is finally in.
The results, obtained by the Voters Alliance, reveal that of the nearly 2,000 couples who applied to marry in the Commonwealth this year, 1,734 couples married their first child.
“It is a record year for Virginia marriage licenses,” Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said.
While some couples have had multiple births in the last few years, it appears that only one of those pregnancies ended in a child born by Cesarean section.
In the last decade, more than 9,000 children have been born in Virginia.
What is a virginia marriage?
The Commonwealth of Virginia has been legally separating the state’s families since 1978.
The law, which was passed by a ballot measure in 1976, states that marriages between married couples must be conducted by two licensed health care professionals, not by the clergy.
Virginia’s marriage laws are one of the few states in the country to allow same-sex couples to marry.
The state has one of few laws that explicitly allow couples to choose to live apart.
