By TechRadars staffIt seems like a simple question: why should a marriage be valid?
But what exactly does a ‘marriage certificate’ or ‘marriage license’ mean?
The definition of marriage has been amended since 2011, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples in California and elsewhere could marry.
But the U,S.
Constitution states that only states can change the definition of what constitutes marriage, and so in a sense, a new state law could be passed that changes the definition.
In New York, however, lawmakers have passed a law that could change the definitions.
The New York State Marriage License Act (2016) allows for any marriage to be recognized in New, New York state.
The legislation passed by the State Assembly last year allows for all marriages to be valid in Newyork, and couples who wish to get married there can register their application online.
“It’s important to have a marriage license, because if we do not have a license, we cannot legally get married in New Yorks state,” said Senator Mary Lou Hochuli, a Democrat.
She also said the law is needed to ensure that same sex couples have the right to marry, and that it is an important tool for couples to obtain their legal rights.
“As a state, we need to make sure we are keeping the law that was passed, and we need people to have it so that if they get married, they are legally married,” Hochulu said.
While New York City and New York is the first major U.K. city to pass such a law, the New York Senate has also passed legislation that would allow for a similar law in the city of San Francisco.
“In New Yorkers, we are all equal, so why not be a partner in that equality?”
“So the way that marriage licenses work, and the way we have always had marriage licenses, is we have to go through a court process,” she said.
The state law will go to the state Assembly for approval, and could come up for a vote in the next few weeks.
If approved, it could be sent to the governor, who will have to sign it.
