Can you get married online?
Yes, you can, according to a new law that will take effect this week.
The Marriage Code, which was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday, allows for a marriage license online in the state.
But in order to get a marriage certificate online in Hawaii, you must meet certain requirements, and the online process can take up to two months to complete.
The state is taking a “wait and see” approach to how it handles the new law, which will not take effect until April 1, according the Department of Public Safety.
The new law also includes a provision allowing couples who live in Hawaii to petition the state to issue marriage certificates for same-sex couples who do not live in the islands.
The department said it was reviewing the legislation to determine if the change is consistent with other state laws and whether it complies with the federal Human Rights Act.
“We expect the department to conduct a thorough review and determine whether the law conforms to the federal human rights act and the laws of other jurisdictions,” the department said in a statement.
