The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Friday that there were an estimated 5,000 suicides among people under 50.
This is up from 5,400 in 2015.
The increase is driven by the increased suicide rates among people age 55 and older, as well as suicides among gay and bisexual men.CDC also said the number of deaths from suicides is increasing.
The rate of deaths per 100,000 people increased from 1.8 in 2015 to 2.1 in 2016.CDC reported that in 2017, more than 1.1 million people who were 55 or older had a suicide attempt.
The CDC noted that there is a higher suicide rate for people 55 and younger than for older people.
